Athabasca University (AU) is Canada’s Open University, offering flexible online courses and distance programs to students across Canada and around the world. With over 850 courses and more than 55 undergraduate and graduate programs in fields like arts, science, and professional studies, AU serves over 40,000 students from every province and territory, as well as 87 countries.
Students can study at their own pace, allowing 83% of them to work while completing their education. They can register for individual courses or enroll in degree, diploma, or certificate programs. Known for its innovative approaches to learning, Athabasca University embraces an open philosophy, outreach initiatives, and technology in its teaching. The university also collaborates with over 350 Canadian and international institutions to enhance its offerings.
Portage College is a community college that has been serving northern Alberta for 48 years. With seven campuses located throughout the region, Portage College offers hands-on learning that combines practical training with modern facilities.
The college provides more than 30 certificate and diploma programs, along with various continuing education courses to over 4,100 students each year. Portage College has strong outcomes, with over 90% of graduates finding jobs in their field within six months of graduation. Notably, 100% of Practical Nurse graduates have passed the national LPN exam for three years in a row, showcasing the college’s commitment to quality training.
Athabasca County proudly hosts Northern Lakes College, which has been providing quality education for 50 years while respecting cultural diversity and meeting community needs. The college offers a range of programs and services that enhance employment opportunities and improve residents’ quality of life. With a focus on innovative training and partnerships with businesses, governments, and community organizations across northern Alberta, the dedicated faculty and staff deliver relevant and high-quality learning experiences.
Northern Lakes College utilizes the Supported Distance Learning (SDL) model to reach students across the region, enabling flexible education for those balancing work and personal commitments. With small class sizes and affordable tuition, students receive personalized attention.
